The Rockford Girls Varsity Tennis team officially opened its season this past weekend, proving that whether under sunny skies or battling the elements, the Rams are ready to compete. Before stepping onto the courts Saturday, the team built momentum in a different way through connection and camaraderie. On Friday, the Rams took part in a team bonding experience at Abandon Acres Escape Rooms, setting the tone for a season built on trust, communication, and teamwork. That chemistry was evident as the team faced a challenging opening tri against a highly regarded Portage Central Mustangs and the Greenville Yellowjackets. Rockford vs. Portage Central The Rams opened against a tough Portage Central lineup, dropping a competitive 3-6 decision. While the singles lineup ran into a strong singles squad, Rockford showed resilience and promise in doubles play. At No. 1 doubles, senior Carlie Wegener and junior Sadie Debski set the tone with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 victory. The No. 3 doubles team of Chloe Elizondo and Kate Coyle battled back after dropping the first set to secure a 3-6, 6-1, 10-6 win in a thrilling comeback. Rockford also earned a point at No. 5 doubles, where Evian Lund and Addyson Schad delivered a solid 6-1, 6-2 performance. Despite the loss, the match provided valuable early season experience against one of the top teams in the area. Rockford vs. Greenville The Rams quickly bounced back in dominant fashion, sweeping Greenville 9-0 in their second match of the day. Rockford’s singles lineup was nearly flawless. Grace Ferry, Ella Fix, and Lilly Bajema each posted commanding 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 singles, respectively. At No. 2 singles, subbing in for Sophie Burns, Leah Stoddard delivered one of the most exciting matches of the day, grinding out a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 win in a tightly contested third set tiebreak. The doubles teams continued their strong play across the board. Wegener and Debski remained undefeated on the day with another straight set win at No. 1 doubles. Maag and Rollenhagen, Elizondo and Coyle, Rosebery and Schwander, and Lund and Schad all contributed victories to complete the sweep. Looking Ahead The weekend showcased both the challenges and potential of this year’s squad. Facing a top tier opponent early tested the Rams’ resolve, while the dominant win over Greenville highlighted their depth and ability to respond. With strong leadership from upperclassmen and impactful performances throughout the lineup, Rockford is off to a promising start. If this weekend is any indication, the Rams are ready to compete, rain or shine, as they build toward a successful season.
