On Saturday, May 25, the Rockford Girls Varsity Tennis team once again proved that toughness isn’t just about strokes and strategy, it’s about mindset. In what has almost become tradition at the annual Utica Invite, the tournament began with a three-hour rain delay, and the conditions never improved much from there. With temperatures barely reaching 45 degrees and wind gusts howling between 15–20 mph, the day demanded grit. Add in multiple venue changes just to find playable courts, and it would have been easy for frustration to creep in. But true to Rockford fashion, the Rams never complained, never whined, and never faltered. They showed up ready to compete whenever their names were called and that mentality defined their day. Rockford made the long trip east to face some of the top competition in the state, a critical step in building a strong case for postseason seeding. The Rams squared off against powerhouse programs including Utica Eisenhower (ranked No. 2 in the state), Rochester Hills Stoney Creek (No. 9), and Okemos (No. 10). Every match across the board was a battle, not only against elite opponents but also against the brutal elements. Despite the challenges, the Rams found success against every team in the field. They secured a strong win over Okemos, knocking off the state’s 10th-ranked squad. Rockford also pushed Stoney Creek to the brink in a tightly contested matchup that came down to the wire. with the Rams falling just short of the win. The Rams were able to win 3 flights against Utica, 3 singles, 3 doubles and 5 doubles, but ultimately fell to Utica Eisenhower, one of the favorites to capture the Division 1 state title. Individually, the Rams delivered standout performances throughout the lineup: Sophie Burns (2 singles) went 2-1 on the day, highlighted by an impressive victory over last year’s #1 seed at the state tournament, a statement win against elite competition. Ella Fix (3 singles) also finished 2-1, battling through one of the toughest flights of the day. She fell just short in an epic third-set tiebreaker against Stoney Creek but showed incredible perseverance and a relentless will to compete. At 3 doubles, Evian Lund and Addy Schad turned in a strong 2-1 performance. Their only loss came in a thrilling third-set tiebreaker against Stoney Creek, a match that showcased their chemistry, resilience, and ability to compete with one of the top teams in the state. At 5 doubles, the duo of Evelyn Schwander and Kate Coyle were dominant, going a perfect 3-0. Their inspired play and consistency set the tone as they controlled points and outworked their opponents throughout the day. Through wind, cold, delays, and constant adjustments, the Rams demonstrated exactly who they are: a team built on toughness, unity, and a relentless will to compete. Rockford now turns its focus back to OK Red Conference play, where they’ll face Hudsonville and Grandville this coming weekend, followed by a matchup with Caledonia. If Saturday was any indication, the Rams are more than ready for whatever comes next.
