On paper, a third-place finish might not sound like the result the Rockford Boys Tennis team was looking for. But anyone who watched the Rams compete at this past weekend’s Rock Tennis Quad knows that the final standings don't tell the whole story. With Forest Hills Northern ranked #2 in the state and Unity Christian ranked #5, Rockford found itself in the middle of one of the most competitive quads the Rams will see all season. Add in a strong DeWitt program, and the day provided exactly what this Rockford team needed: high-level competition, long matches, adversity and an opportunity to see how much they could grow from one match to the next. And grow they did. From top to bottom, the Rams played what coaches felt were their best and most complete matches of the season. Rockford opened the day against DeWitt and came out firing. The Rams cruised to a 10-0 victory, dropping just one set in the entire match. It was a dominant start, but more importantly, it gave the team momentum heading into two of the toughest opponents they will face all season. The challenge would only get tougher from there. Next up was #5-ranked Unity Christian, and the Rams knew they would have to raise their level of play. Rockford ultimately fell 3-7, but the score doesn't accurately describe how competitive the matches were. The Rams battled for every point and had opportunities throughout the lineup. The doubles teams, in particular, showed tremendous grit. At #1 doubles, Jayden Fudge and Ryan Stark fought through a difficult match and continued to compete for every ball, refusing to give away points. Their effort was representative of the entire team—compete, adjust, fight and keep pushing. Against a top-five opponent, there was no room for complacency, and the Rams responded by playing some of their best tennis of the day. If Unity Christian wasn't enough of a test, Rockford then took on the #2-ranked team in the state, Forest Hills Northern. Once again, the Rams finished on the short end of a 3-7 score, but once again, the scoreboard didn't tell the entire story. Rockford competed in every flight and created opportunities throughout the lineup. One of the day's biggest highlights came at #2 singles, where Broderik Gee battled through a grueling three-set match to earn a huge victory over Forest Hills Northern. Gee's performance was a perfect example of what the Rams were trying to accomplish all day, stay composed, compete through adversity and find a way to finish. And the long day made those accomplishments even more impressive. Getting Better as the Day Got Longer A tennis quad like this one is not a quick afternoon at the courts. These boys were playing seven to nine hours of tennis in a single day. That means long matches, short breaks, physical fatigue and the mental challenge of having to reset and compete again and again. The expectation wasn't simply to survive the day. The expectation was to get better throughout the day. And that is exactly what the Rams did. Coach Tom Huizing was particularly pleased with the way the team continued to improve as the competition became tougher. "When you consider these boys are playing seven to nine hours of tennis in a day, playing strong and getting better throughout the day is no small feat. I feel the boys did that today." The Rams didn't let fatigue become an excuse. Instead, they continued to battle for every singles point and fight for every doubles ball. That mentality is going to serve this team well as the season continues. The individual flight results also demonstrated the quality of tennis Rockford produced throughout the day. Rockford Flight Champions: #2 Singles — Broderik Gee Rockford Flight Runners-Up: #4 Singles — Noah Clark #1 Doubles — Jayden Fudge & Ryan Stark #5 Doubles — Ethan Lund & Julian Scott #6 Doubles — Jasper Patrick & Sawyer Clark Having one flight champion and four additional runner-up finishes against this level of competition was another indication that the Rams were competing throughout the lineup. The Rams may have finished third at the Rock Tennis Quad, but the day was about much more than where Rockford finished in the standings. It was about competing against two of the best teams in the state. It was about playing their best tennis late in the day instead of fading. It was about battling for every singles point. It was about doubles teams finding grit when matches got tight. And it was about a young Rockford team learning what it takes to compete at the highest levels. Most importantly, it was a day filled with great competition and great sportsmanship. All four programs, Rockford, Forest Hills Northern, Unity Christian and DeWitt, brought tremendous class to the courts. Each team competed hard, supported its teammates and showed respect for its opponents. That is what high school tennis should be. For the Rams, third place was not a disappointment. It was a quality finish against elite competition and another important step forward. The Rams are learning, battling and getting better. And if this weekend was any indication, this team is going to continue getting better with every match they play.
