The Rockford boys varsity tennis team kept their conference momentum rolling with a commanding 9-0 sweep over Grand Haven on Monday. This marked the Rams’ second OK Red match of the season as they traveled to face the Buccaneers, a talented and well-coached squad that continues to build competitive depth throughout their lineup. Heading into the match, Rockford knew they couldn’t afford to overlook any flight. Grand Haven’s players fight hard across the board, and matches can swing quickly if a team starts flat. But the Rams avoided that pitfall, jumping out strong in the opening games at nearly every position. That early energy set the tone, and from there Rockford never looked back. “The first few games are everything in tennis,” said head coach Tom Huizing. “If you can come out steady and confident, it often dictates the match. Our guys did a great job staying focused and not letting up.” The singles lineup delivered a clean sweep. Senior Elijah Johnson battled through a tight first set at No. 1 singles before taking control for a 7-5, 6-1 victory. Fellow senior Easton Wurm also ground out a gritty straight-sets win at No. 2, 7-5, 6-3. Junior Alex Moore and senior Noah Clark showed consistency and firepower, each earning convincing wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles by scores of 6-0, 6-3. On the doubles side, Rockford’s depth shined. The senior duo of Quinn Geshel and Sam Martin cruised to a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles, while the teams of Jayden Fudge and Joseph Miesiack, along with sophomores Coen Beickman and Broderik Gee, both earned hard-fought straight-set wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. The No. 4 team of seniors Tray Storms and Carter Drolema outlasted a competitive Grand Haven pair 6-4, 6-4. Rounding out the sweep, juniors Scott Julian and Liam Storms went the distance at No. 5 doubles, pulling away in the third set for a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory. With the win, the Rams improve their OK Red record and continue to show why they’re a force in conference play. They’ll return to the courts at home on Wednesday for another key OK Red showdown against East Kentwood. Match Results – Rockford vs. Grand Haven Singles #1 Elijah Johnson (R) def.
